EV Charging Stations Belong at Our Congregations

January 14, 2026 by Gregory Stevens
EV Charging at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary

Faith communities have always been places of refuge, moral leadership, and collective care. As the climate crisis deepens, congregations are uniquely positioned to model the kind of future we believe in. One powerful and surprisingly accessible way to do that is by installing electric vehicle charging stations, building out the electrical infrastructure needed for the clean energy transition.

Transportation is one of the largest sources of climate pollution in California, with the Bay Area having the 8th worst air quality in the country. Electric vehicles dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve local air quality, especially in communities burdened by asthma and pollution. When congregations install EV charging stations, they help accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels while offering a tangible public good rooted in care for creation and neighbor alike.

EV chargers at congregations turn parking lots into climate solutions. They serve members, staff, and visitors while also supporting the broader community. Chargers invite people to spend time nearby, attend events, or simply feel welcomed. They signal that the congregation is forward looking, values climate justice, and is willing to put faith into action in visible ways.

There are also practical benefits. Charging stations can generate modest revenue, increase property value, and make congregations more attractive hosts for meetings and community gatherings. They align seamlessly with sustainability goals many congregations already hold, such as solar installations, tree planting, or energy efficiency upgrades.

Even better, congregations in Alameda County and San Joaquin County have a unique opportunity right now. Through our partnership with AVA Community Energy, qualifying congregations can have EV chargers installed at no cost. This means no upfront installation expenses and no complicated process. It is one of the easiest ways for faith communities to step into climate leadership while reducing barriers for members of the surrounding community to choose cleaner transportation.

At its core, installing EV charging stations is a theological act. It reflects values of stewardship, justice, and shared responsibility. It says that we care about the air our children breathe, the stability of our climate, and the well being of future generations. It transforms sacred space into climate action without compromising mission or accessibility.

If your congregation is in Alameda County or San Joaquin County, now is the time to explore this opportunity. Together, we can turn our faith communities into hubs of hope, resilience, and clean energy for all.
