Cool Climate Award Winner: Debbie Mytels

September 30, 2025 by Gregory Stevens

We are thrilled to announce that Debbie Mytels and the Redwood City Unitarian Universalist Fellowship are this year’s recipients of the Climate Catalyst Award at California Interfaith Power & Light’s Cool Climate Awards!

Debbie is a long time member of the Redwood City UU Fellowship and has led and inspired its many climate actions, from greening their church buildings to organizing faith voices for policy action. This year, she organized and trained a group of 15 advocates who traveled to Sacramento for CIPL’s lobby day.

But Debbie’s activism doesn’t stop with her own congregation. With Redwood City UU Fellowship’s support, she founded Peninsula Interfaith Climate Action (PICA) ten years ago. This CIPL regional interfaith climate action network involves lay leaders in about two dozen faith communities from San Jose to San Mateo. They meet monthly to share plans for reducing their carbon emissions, educate their communities, and support climate protection legislation.

At Redwood City UU Fellowship, Debbie spearheaded the congregation’s Green Transition, from de-carbonizing their building to having zero water waste as it all goes to nurture their no-lawn garden! The Redwood City Unitarian Universalist Fellowship has become a powerhouse of climate action and advocacy because of Debbie’s long-term commitment to her faith and climate justice.

Join us at the Cool Climate Awards 2025 to celebrate Debbie Mytels, the Redwood City Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, and other inspiring climate champions:
