While our attention is focused on racial justice, COVID-19, and the economic downturn, climate change continues as a threat multiplier. And CIPL is in action for crucial legislation that protects health, creates job, and addresses racial and economic injustice. Join us the week of August 10!
With the extended stay at home orders, our usual “lobby day” has turned into a week of advocacy, to be done virtually! That means it will be easier than ever for you to participate, (with zero carbon footprint!). We will be advocating for several crucial bills: AB 345, to create a setback between oil and gas drilling and homes, schools, and places of worship; AB 1080/SB 54, to reduce single-use plastic by 75% by 2030; and SB 288, to prioritize safe streets for walkers and bikers, like students and older folks.
You, as a person of faith and conscience committed to climate justice, are key to our Week of Advocacy. You will be briefed on priority legislation, learn how to tell your personal “story”, and join meetings or other actions. Our Week of Advocacy includes:
- Monday, August 10, 10:00am – 11:30am – Briefing session of priority bills. (All are welcome.)
- Tuesday, August 11, 5:00pm – 6:30 – “Storytelling from the Heart”, led by Rev. Doug Bland, Arizona Interfaith Power & Light. (All are welcome.)
- Wednesday and Thursday, August 12 and 13 – Legislative meetings with California Assembly Members and Senators. Note: the schedule is still in progress. You will attend a meeting with your legislator(s) or be asked to take important action another way. To register for one or more of these events, click here.
With good news on the climate front in the last two weeks, we are hopeful that the tide is turning toward the climate action we need. Now is the time to push for a rapid shift away from fossil fuels and a green economic recovery. The California faith community has been an active player for more than two decades. We’ve seen both wins and losses in the legislature – often by only a few votes – and we know the difference the faith voice makes. Join us for the Week of Advocacy and continue these efforts!
