Our sun is an obvious, though underutilized source of clean, reliable and renewable energy. Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels and solar tiles are a way to convert the sun's energy into energy for buildings and homes. According to the Green LA program, an average system (2kW) can provide up to 80% of your electricity needs.
There are several options for buying and maintaining a solar system for your congregation, each with varying degrees of self-sufficiency as well as energy and financial savings.
The cost of a system is dependent upon the load of energy used, which determines the size of the system. Though initially they are costly, solar systems are eligible for rebates and as a CIPL member you qualify for a group discount if you purchase panels. The Energy Commission just increased the amount of rebates to cover nearly 50% of the purchase and installation costs for solar panels.
Eventually, due to financial savings on your energy bills and the possibility of selling power back to your local power company (known as net-metering), the initial investment eventually pays for itself. If your system generates less than a mega-watt of energy, you can receive credit for the excess power you generate.
There are two types of solar systems: a "stand-alone" module put over your roof or free standing. The second option is "solar tiles" which is a combination of roofing shingles and solar-tiles. These are visually attractive and a good option for those already installing a new roof.
