'Global Warming Solutions Act' Caps California's Greenhouse Gas Emissions

AB 32 - California's landmark global warming bill - has passed the state legislature. The bill imposes the most sweeping controls on greenhouse gas emissions in the nation. It puts the state at the forefront of a broad campaign to curb the man-made causes of climate change despite resistance in Washington.

Governor Schwarzenegger has yet to sign the bill, but has pledged his support of it.

We here at California Interfaith Power and Light have been working to support this legislation for some time - this is truly a day for celebration!

Thank you CIPL!

Thank you especially to all those CIPL members who participated in our June 28th lobby visit in Sacramento (see above), those members of the clergy who agreed to sign our 'Open Letter to the Governor and California State Legislature', those who attended district meetings with their legislators, and those who called in their support of the bill to legislative offices at the last minute. The faith community in California took a moral stance on global warming, and our combined voices were heard! Congratulations again for all your hard work!

About Assembly Bill 32 (AB 32):

Assembly Bill 32 establishes a mandatory cap on greenhouse gases - requiring overall emissions to be reduced to 1990 levels by 2020, or 25% below projected levels. It sets out a two-year time frame, until 2009, to establish how the system will operate and requires industry to start their emissions cuts by 2012. It calls for regulations to be designed "in a manner that is equitable, seeks to minimize costs and maximize the total benefits to California, and encourages early action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

Thank you again! We look forward to working with all of you in the future!
