SPOTLIGHT on Global Warming Project Update:

Congratulations to all of our member (and soon to be member!) congregations who signed up and are now registered to screen An Inconvenient Truth the first week in October! You are one of 300 congregations in California that will participate in this project with CIPL; you are incredibly one of 4,000 congregations across the country screening the film with our Interfaith Power and Light campaign! Thanks to the efforts and outreach of our national office, An Inconvenient Truth will be shown in congregations in all 50 U.S. states!

So what now?

I have received hundreds of e-mails from you asking about next steps--I'm so excited by your enthusiasm in preparing for your screening!

This week you will be receiving confirmation e-mails from our national office giving you logistics for your screening. This will hopefully answer some of your questions. Be on the lookout for this e-mail.

I have been asked to alert you to a few things:

1) The Spotlight Media Tool Kit, now available at www.iplspotlightprep.org.

2) The post-screening Discussion Guide, now available at www.interfaithpowerandlight.org.

3) Participant Packet materials, which will be available as downloads from the www.interfaithpowerandlight.org website within days.

The packets containing the DVD and paper copies of the Participant Packet will arrive the last week in September. They will arrive by UPS.

I would like to encourage you to explore opportunities to engage youth in your screening event. Suggestions on how to do this can be found at www.interfaithpowerandlight.org, in our August Spotlight Newsletter. If you are having trouble finding this on the website just click the 'Spotlight on Global Warming' flashing icon on the front page of the site and scroll down until you reach 'Download our latest newsletter - August 21, 2006.pdf.'

If you are in need of a CIPL representative or guest speaker for your event PLEASE e-mail me as soon as possible.

As always, I am here to answer questions you may have throughout this process. During the next few weeks however, the best way to reach me is by e- mail:
jessica@interfaithpower.org.

I look forward to working with all of you as your screening date nears!

Pope: Environmental Degradation Hurts the Poor:

Pope"Environmental degradation makes poor people's existence intolerable," the pope said two weeks ago. He called on all Christians to steward the earth and to protect its resources, sharing them in solidarity.

The pontiff's appeal came a few days before Christian associations in Italy celebrate a "day for the safeguarding of Creation" (September 1st).

Italian Environment Minister Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio echoed Pope Benedict's remarks: "It would be very useful if all the parishes in Italy equipped themselves with solar energy," he said. Amen to that.

New York Times: Discouraging Study on Global Warming:

According to The New York Times, methane (a powerful heat-trapping gas) is pushing its way out of the thawing Siberian permafrost five times faster than scientists previously estimated. Methane is 23 times as effective as carbon dioxide at trapping heat, and could have catastrophic consequences if it begins to collect in vast quantities in the earth's fragile atmosphere.

CIPL Endorses Proposition 87:

CIPL has decided to endorse Proposition 87 in California, otherwise known as the 'Oil Tax Initiative,' because we feel it aligns with our goals of decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and caring for creation. Prop. 87 is set to reduce gasoline and diesel usage by 25% over 10 years. It does this by providing cash rebates to consumers who buy cleaner, alternative fuel vehicles and incentives for renewable energy technology development. It also seeks to expand the use of solar and wind power and other renewable fuels and renewable technologies. Please read more about Prop. 87, and if you are interested in organizing around this issue, please contact Outreach Director Jessica Brown.

Thank you for all your work and patience this month CIPL, I look forward to all our work together in the near future!

Blessings,

Jessica Brown
