Remember last October's 4,000 An Inconvenient Truth screenings?
The national Interfaith Power and Light campaign now brings
you New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman's Green: The
New Red, White and Blue - a perfect give for the faith community
around (energy!) Independence Day.
In this documentary Friedman explores various 'green' and
'not-so-green' technologies: hydroelectric, solar, wind, and
nuclear power, hybrid, electric, and hydrogen fuel-cell cars,
clean-coal, bio-fuels, and energy conservation methods. He
looks at what works to reduce the output of greenhouse gases,
carbon emissions and ultimately stop global warming and ensure
political stability throughout the world. To receive a copy
of the film:
Step 1: If you have not already, register your congregation
with California Interfaith Power and
Light (CIPL). Simply screening the film qualifies you
for FREE membership in CIPL. Log on to the online covenant
to fill out all required fields and SUBMIT.
Step 2:

Interfaith Power and Light Website. Follow the instructions

New CAFE Standards for (Energy)
Independence Day
Soaring gasoline prices have persuaded more citizens and
Congressional leaders of the need for fuel-efficient vehicles
- and the federal legislation to mandate them via increased
CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) standards.
This month, the US Senate passed a resolution to raise CAFE
standards from 25 to 35 mpg for new cars by 2020, and to include
passenger trucks and SUVs in the fleet average. The bill now
moves from the Senate to the House, where it may face increased
challenges.
Senator Feinstein expressed surprise when the bill passed
so easily: "I'm flabbergasted. I thought we'd be arguing
this all night." Popular recognition of the need for
independence from oil has clearly taken priority in the minds
and hearts of many of our nation's legislators.
CIPL Makes News and
Campaign News
CIPL's campaign to challenge the Automakers Alliance (specifically
Toyota)'s lawsuit against AB 1493 appeared in a Contra Costa
Times article on June 18th. Read
the whole story HERE.
The lawsuit has been postponed until October. We will continue
with the campaign, however, and appreciate our over 225 clergy
who have added their signatures! Please continue to spread
the word in your communities about our need for clergy support.
Stay tuned to our blog and upcoming newsletters for more information.
Also in the news, CIPL founder Rev. Sally Bingham placed
as one of 15 finalists for the Purpose Prize - an award for
Americans over 60 who are leading a new age of social innovation.
The five winners will be announced in September, and will
each receive $100,000.
AB 32 Early Actions:
Not Enough?
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) met in Los Angeles
on June 20, 2007 to discuss proposed early action measures
for climate change mitigation (part of their implementation
of AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006). A number
of you may recall that CIPL lobbied for and has kept a close
watch on AB 32.
Many organizational representatives arrived to speak at this
CARB hearing, including CIPL Steering Committee member Rev.
Al Cohen and CIPL Southern California Outreach Coordinator
Mike Sandler. Members of the public felt the CARB staff could
to do more, yet CARB reported they lacked the staff and financial
resources to meet the strict timeline set out by AB 32.
Rev. Cohen countered:
"The IPCC report and the Stern Report are clear. The
science is in. Cost effectiveness is not the issue because
we must act now. There is money available. Double the staff
if more help is needed, as has been suggested today by the
staff. Triple the staff. Build the staff to do what needs
to be done. Radical change is coming. We can manage that change
or be managed by it. I am asking you to demonstrate courageous
leadership so we can see public policy which meets the challenges
global warming has presented us." A prophetic voice for
California's faith community, bravo Rev. Al!

7.7.07: A Global
Party to Save a Global Climate
This Saturday, July 7 (7/7/07), Al Gore's worldwide concert
Live Earth will seek to mobilize music fans for action. Live
Earth - a 24-hour, 7-continent concert series - will bring
together more than 100 music artists and 2 billion people.
The concert theme (S.O.S.: Save Our Selves) hopes to draw
greater attention to the internationalization of understanding
of global warming, an issue uniting us beyond differences
in country or creed to take action and change our choices
- before our climate changes any further.
CIPL will table at a Live Earth SF event, from 11am-1pm at
Jillian's in the Sony Metreon. Come join us!
Until Next Month,
